I think following Charlie Sheen on Twitter is as nasty as keeping or following a hate blog. You’re seeking some cheap entertainment in someone else’s pain and problems. You realize this guy isn’t just an asshole, right? He’s an incredibly unwell asshole. I realize that waiting to see what over the top thing he’ll say or do next, especially when someone is that ill and that rich, is intriguing. But the situation is liable to up its own ante pretty quickly, and in a pretty ugly fashion. I don’t understand gawking at someone’s addiction spirals as entertainment. Yes, the things he’s said recently are crazy, and sad, and sadly funny, and we’re all aware of it, but actively following it instead of just hearing about it seems pretty fucked up to me. Just because he’s in the public eye doesn’t mean you have to pay attention to him. Is it making you feel better? Why? Because it’s so outside the realm of anything that could happen to you? What about your loved ones?

I realize I sound pretty sanctimonious here. I widened my eyes and chuckled in disbelief when I heard that first interview too. But the world egging him on with attention like he’s the crazy guy you want at your party makes me sad. This isn’t going to end in any way that will satisfy anyone.
